Join the Rangers of Khao Lampi–Hat Thai Mueang National Park for a fun-filled day of learning, adventure, and connection with nature. Designed especially for families with young children, the Junior Ranger Experience is a gentle and immersive way to explore one of Phang Nga’s most important protected forests. Located just a short drive from Khao Lak, this hands-on tour gives families the rare chance to step into the shoes of a real National Park Ranger.

The day begins with a warm welcome at the Ranger Station, where you’ll meet the team who protect this lush rainforest. Young explorers will help cook sticky rice snacks over an open fire — a jungle-style breakfast that sets the scene for the day ahead. Then it’s time to prepare bamboo rice for lunch using traditional forest techniques. Kids are encouraged to get involved, giving them a meaningful and memorable connection with Thai culture and outdoor life.

With energy high and curiosity sparked, it’s time to hit the trail. The group sets off with the Rangers on a gentle jungle patrol through the forest. Children will search for animal tracks, learn how to spot edible or useful plants, and listen for the sounds of wildlife. The patrol leads to a hidden jungle waterfall, where families can enjoy a refreshing swim in a natural pool surrounded by tropical greenery — a true jungle adventure moment!

Join real National Park Rangers for a hands-on day in the forest

After cooling off, it is time to return to the Ranger Station for a freshly prepared Thai lunch. Meals are made using local ingredients, supporting community livelihoods and reducing the carbon footprint. Following lunch, kids can assist with safe, age-appropriate Ranger tasks such as watering tree seedlings, sweeping leaves, or tidying up the base — an engaging way for children to learn responsibility and teamwork.

The final stop of the day is a local reforestation site, where every child gets to plant their own native tree. This is more than just symbolic — each tree is GPS-tagged and capable of absorbing carbon dioxide for years to come. Guests receive a personalised tree planting certificate with GPS coordinates, so families can revisit their tree in the future. It’s a unique souvenir and a lasting contribution to Thailand’s forests.

More than just a tour, the Junior Ranger Experience is a low-carbon, purpose-driven family day out. With small group sizes, personalised attention, and activities designed to suit children aged 4 and up, this tour is perfect for families looking for an educational, eco-friendly alternative to standard excursions. Discover, learn, and give back — all in a safe, supportive environment that kids and adults alike will love.

Carbon Balanced Tour

Carbon-Balanced Offsetting & Conservation in Khao Lak

This tour has been carefully designed to be low carbon, locally supportive, and fully carbon-balanced — so families can enjoy their day out while making a real, measurable difference to the environment. Based on the average round-trip distance from central Khao Lak (such as JW Marriott), each guest generates approximately 20 kg of CO₂e during this tour. We don’t just acknowledge that footprint — we actively work to offset it.

To achieve this, every guest plants a native Thai tree at an official reforestation site. Commonly planted species include Hopea odorata (Takien), which is native to this region and well-known for its ability to sequester carbon. These trees can absorb between 9–15 kg of CO₂ per year, and continue to do so over a long lifespan. The trees are GPS tagged, and each guest receives a personalised tree planting certificate showing the exact coordinates of their tree, so you can revisit the location online and track your impact.

But offsetting carbon is just the start. This tour also aims to reduce emissions from the beginning. We keep travel distances short by operating close to Khao Lak, and we maintain small group sizes to reduce environmental pressure and enhance your family’s experience.

Lunch is freshly prepared using locally sourced ingredients, helping to reduce food miles while supporting local farmers and suppliers. We’ve eliminated single-use plastic wherever possible by using refillable drinking water bottles and reusable food containers, and we regularly review our operations to reduce waste and improve sustainability.

All these actions work together to ensure your adventure is not just enjoyable, but part of a wider environmental solution. By choosing this tour, you’re giving your family the opportunity to connect with nature, contribute directly to Thailand’s forest regeneration efforts, and reduce the carbon footprint of your holiday — one tree at a time.

FAQ’s

Is the Junior Ranger Experience suitable for very young children?

Yes — the tour is designed especially for families with young children aged 4 years and up. All activities are safe, age-appropriate, and guided by experienced National Park Rangers and licensed tour guides. We keep walking distances short, provide regular rest and water breaks, and focus on interactive learning and fun in nature. Younger kids especially love the jungle snack cooking, waterfall swim, and Junior Ranger badge.

What do children actually do on this tour?

Children are invited to become real-life Junior Rangers for the day. They’ll cook sticky rice over an open fire, join forest patrols with the Rangers, learn to identify animal tracks, cool off in a jungle waterfall, help out at the Ranger Station, and plant their own native tree. At the end of the tour, they’ll receive a Junior Ranger badge and a personalised tree planting certificate with GPS coordinates.

Where is the tour held and how long is the journey?

The tour takes place in Khao Lampi–Hat Thai Mueang National Park, one of the most beautiful and ecologically important forests in Phang Nga. It’s a short and scenic 30–45 minute drive from Khao Lak, depending on your hotel location. Transport is included and provided in comfortable, air-conditioned vehicles.

Is the tour physically demanding?

Not at all. This experience was designed to be gentle and accessible for families. The forest walk to the waterfall is on a well-used trail and includes plenty of stops to explore and learn. Most families — including those with small children — find the day fun, manageable, and rewarding.

How does this tour help the environment?

This is a low-carbon, conservation-focused tour. Each guest plants a native tree (such as Takien) capable of absorbing 9–15kg of CO₂ per year — offsetting the tour’s carbon footprint. Trees are GPS-tagged, so your family can visit it to check it’s progress. We also use local ingredients, avoid single-use plastics, and keep group sizes small to minimise environmental impact.

What should we bring?

We recommend bringing:

  • Swimwear and towel (for the waterfall swim)
  • A change of clothes (for comfort after getting wet)
  • Mosquito repellent, hat, and sun protection
  • A small daypack if needed

We provide refillable drinking water, snacks, and lunch, so no need to bring food or drinks.

How many people will be on the tour?

To ensure a safe and personal experience, we keep our groups small — usually between 2 and 10 guests total. This allows for better engagement with the Rangers, less environmental impact, and a more relaxed atmosphere for families with young children.

Is the tour safe and insured?

Yes — safety is a top priority. The tour is fully insured, and all activities are overseen by licensed guides and official National Park staff. First aid kits are carried, and the itinerary is designed to avoid unnecessary risks or strenuous activity. Please inform us in advance if any member of your group has allergies or special requirements.

Will I see wildlife during the trek?

This is a natural, wild area — so sightings can’t be guaranteed — but many guests spot birds, insects, animal tracks, and tropical plant life along the way. The focus is on the ecosystem rather than specific animals.

What happens if the weather is bad?

This tour operates in most weather conditions — in fact, trekking in the jungle in the rain can be an amazing experience, It is a rainforest afterall! The forest canopy often provides shelter from showers.

However, if the National Park Rangers assess any risk from extreme weather (such as storms, flooding, or unsafe trail conditions), we will adjust the itinerary or reschedule the tour to keep everyone safe. Your safety always comes first.
